Although suffering massive damage during WW2, historic buildings remain including the remnants of medieval walls and a church from the eleventh century. Famous structures include the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building, rebuilt at the end of the last century. The Berlin Wall, which divided the city during the cold war, was breached in 1989 and the remnants of it are one of the most popular tourist attractions. Developed after the fall of the wall, the contemporary architecture of Potsdamer Square is truly stunning and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The top ten attractions include Check Point Charlie and the Mauer Museum where you can learn of the attempts, some successful, others fatally unsuccessful, of those wishing to escape from east to west.
With average temperatures similar to Britain, Berlin city breaks can be taken at any time of year. Summer, however is the most popular season when visitors can make the most of the parks, rivers and lakes. If the weather is inclement you can spend some of your time in the many museums and churches, and of course, the shops. Choose your Berlin city break in December and enjoy the enchanting Christmas markets filled with locally crafted goods and home-made goodies to tempt the palate.
